I’ve been hearing it everywhere lately, and wondering why everyone is referring to the ‘gig economy’ – what is it and what does that really mean?
The ‘Gig Economy’ is referring to the influx of short term, contract or freelance jobs that are out there! Rather than people taking on full time or part time jobs, people are seeking (and being sought after) for more one off, small, casual, flexible jobs. Airtasker is one website which enables people to access their share of the gig economy by either adding small tasks to be completed by someone else OR to reply to postings and offer their services.
Tasks that we are seeing lots of in the ‘gig economy’ are things like copywriting (one off articles), setting up websites, walking and washing pets, putting together flat pack furniture, moving and delivering items, one-off photo shoots and small labour tasks like moving dirt, laying turf, or painting.
The beauty of these small gig type tasks is that you don’t usually need to be qualified to do any gigs for payment! If you’re handy in the garden, or have painted your own house, or designed your own resume – even if you can just lift heavy items, have a ute or own a screwdriver – then you can take on tasks on sites such as Airtasker in the gig economy.
If your skills are more professional based, such as admin, finance, design or marketing related you might want to look at a website such as Upwork or Fivverr where skills listed can be more business / professional based rather than ad-hoc and random!
Hopefully you now have a better understanding around the concept of the ‘Gig Economy’ and feel comfortable possibly even completing some tasks yourself!
