You’ve decided what you want to sell or what service you want to provide – now you need a name to operate under!
It can be something fun, cheeky, memorable, include your name or include the product or service name in it. There could be endless possibilities, so here are some tips to help you decide how and what to name your side hustle!
Think about how you want your brand name to position you
Are you a luxury product? Are you an eco friendly product? Are you a fun brand? A feminine brand?
Different words help to elicit different feelings and get customers in the right mindset when they see your product or service. If you name your product 5 Star Exclusive Candles, people would be expecting a premium product with a high price tag. Likewise, if Sarah’s Super Cheap Spray Tans are a high-end price and product – people will be confused.
Start by writing down some words that relate to your product and service and think about describing words that match what you will be doing. Mix and match the words until you find one that has a ‘ring’ to it and that you can imagine a brand being created around!
Use a name generator tool to help get some ideas going
Shopify Business Name Generator –
Shopify has one which will help you to name your online store or just help you get ideas for your side hustle name. You just add one word that best describes what you do. It will bring up 100+ options for you that are available as shopify shop names.
I tried it and put the word ‘HUSTLE’ in – lots and lots of options came up, passionate hustle, hustle marketplace, hustle turtle (haha) and so on. I could pick my favourite and reserve it or just use it get some ideas happening!
Namelix is another website which helps you to get some business name ideas going. You start by typing in a sentence about your business and then some similar words. You then select what length of business name you would like (Short, medium or long) and then you pick a name style (pretty cool option!). It will then generate a range of names. Most of the good options were ‘premium options’ trying to sell you hosting and domains however shows you some logo samples too which is nice to start imagining how your brand could look. You can still use these ideas to generate a name and register it in Australia with a .com.au domain name and check social availability.
Hire An Expert (at super affordable rates!)
Get someone from Fiverr to help you come up with business names! Some of these services also include logo creation which is a handy two-in-one approach to get your branding off to an awesome start. I actually had my logo created through Fiverr. Speak with a creative professional and tell them what you want your brand to convey and hopefully their creative ideas bring back the perfect business name for your side hustle!
Side Note – Using your name
Using your name in your products can be a really nice touch and personalise the service you are providing. There is a trend to support small, so Bob’s Lawn Mowing or Sarah’s Cookies are a nice and simple way to name yourself and let people know you’re a small business. Be careful though, if you ever wish to sell the business later on, or expand to have other people working with you – they may be confused if Bob or Sarah don’t work with them! So if that’s potentially on the horizon it’s safer to stick with a more generic name.
The next step is to check that your brand name is available across all the channels you will be using!
Check Facebook, Instagram, other social sites and domain name availability before finalising your name.
We hope these tips and ideas help you generate a brand name you love and will be successful with for years to come!
